WORK FROM HOME- A PARABLE
Work from Home, which was a monopoly practice of the IT industry is now a common phrase in all sectors of human
life.
When airlines started E-tickets, it was difficult for the layman to accept this demotion. Not being able to board a flight
with multiple layers of red color printed tickets establishing ones’ status symbol was a sore point with many.
In the past when friends in IT boasted about the WFH practice, even I have pictured myself in front of a laptop at home,
holding a cup of coffee, in a pair of sweatshirts & joggers, enjoying the freedom from monotonous schedules. Fast
Forward to the present and thanks to Corona, I am finally getting a taste of this ritual. I have finally got the chance to
inform everyone concerned, “Yes, I am working from home.”, while hiding behind a deceptive smile.
It was widely believed that the urge for fame and to utilize the high stakes involved, pharma companies will succeed in
eradicating CoVid. Evidently, this is turning out to be a far-fetched dream with new threats of novel viruses arising every
day. IT Giants and Tycoons are developing platforms restricting our fundamental right of freedom of movement with
online delivery people and deflating the malls onto computer screens. WFH seems to be the permanent reality for the
working class.
But, with a wife screaming on one end and kids throwing tantrums and customers expecting calls and emails at
midnight citing the WFH excuse, I wonder me losing my life to WFH & WIFI? Will I be able to spend some personal time
with family? Will I sit in a garden without fearing an office call & mail? Am I missing some “quality” fun time with my
friends at a coffee shop without thinking of work, or am I too old fashioned to adapt to this concept?
To quote Elon Musk “I could either watch it happen or be a part of it."
