SHIPPING WORLD
MODULAR, VERTICAL FARMS
One of the pioneers, Freight Farms is revolutionizing
new ways of growing fresh food in all climates, in all
seasons.
Modular farming, which is growing crops in self-contained, movable units so they
can thrive in difficult climates, is becoming more than just a sustainability goal for
social impact organizations. This is also becoming a big business that’s increasingly
being backed by venture capitalists and private equity firms. New startups in this
market are sometimes models for not only how to make profits while contributing to
the social good, but also how such profits can lead to innovation that goes on to
create additional social good.
Freight Farms
The pioneer vertical farming company, Freight Farms, founded in 2010 offers their
"Leafy Green Machine" , a high-tech hydroponic farm built inside a repurposed
shipping container that's connected to the Cloud. The whole system is controlled
and monitored by sensors that feed back to the digital brain that responds to what is
happening on the farm and adjusts accordingly.
Farmers use their smart phones to keep tabs on soil temperatures, lighting,
moisture content, CO2 levels and other environmental variables to grow lettuce,
herbs and other greens in nutrient-laced water.
The successor to the Leafy Green Machine, the Greenery is the most versatile,
turnkey farming solution on the market. Both the grow racks and the panels that
hold the LEDs are now movable, so farmers can customize the layout inside the
container based on the type and number of plants they grow.
Sustainitech
Sustainitech Inc. builds vertical farms, which are modular indoor hydroponic
greenhouses for growing vegetables on multiple levels. The company builds high-
density commercial farms inside of shipping containers. The vertical farms grow
leafy green vegetables, such as spring mix and lettuce, inside refrigerated shipping
containers, and are delivered the same day to local groceries. The company was
founded in 2012 and is based in Edmonton, Canada.
