REVERSING THE AGE- THE MELLOWING
POWER TO YOU!
The power of social media to connect long lost friends proved palpable when I met my childhood pal, after a long
hiatus. But what stunned me was that he was bursting with energy analogous to a teenager and never showed any
signs of aging, whereas I was balding with shades of grey on my head, constantly growing laterally!
After having broken the ice, I was eager to know what made him so vibrant even at this age. His musings on being
young while gracefully ageing, completely swept me off my feet. Here is what he had to say:
I belong to the 5 AM club (his definition of being the early bird) and hit the bed in such a way that 7-8 hours of shut eye
occurs to me. The black eyes are bid adieu, that way. Making the bed is a starter for being organized and I ensure this
every morning, before jumping off, from the bed. Starting off with green tea mixed with mint and lime
juice, supplements me with enough antioxidants to at least slow down, if not avert, the process of natural oxidation.
This follows 20 minutes of speed walking.
15 minutes of meditation and reading ensues. Meditation helps me to dodge the red herrings and maintain a laser
focus on the tasks ahead. Reading improves my vocabulary and creativity. I do indulge in frequent brain games to pep
up the brain’s neuroplasticity. Writing follows and journaling eats up a short span of my time. Breakfast consists of two
thick slices of bread with some natural jam and some raw fruits. Podcasts from Robin Sharma and Tony Robbins are
real ear candies, while on my way to work.
I practice mindfulness and focus on the present, deliberately muzzling the past and future. I am the average of the
first five individuals with whom I am associated with and this cautions me to pick my company, sensibly. The energy
vampires camouflaged as friends, colleagues and relatives are weeded out and grapevines nipped in the bud, that
way.
Lunch consists of a small bowl of rice topped up with some boiled vegetables and curd. Post lunch sessions are
usually heavy and this helps me to feel light. Hitting the gym in the evening with an intensive 25 minutes workout aids
me to control the flab and prevent lateral growth. Dinner is moderately light with a few nuts, salads and fruits.
30 minutes of reading paired with journaling propels me to buckle up for the next day. An intense expression of
gratitude for all the good things attracted during the day provides succor to hit the hay and be an early bird.
As he trotted off bursting with energy, my mind was inundated with veneration, for him.
Take away: - Being a couch potato is a sure-shot way to the grave.
Good read: The 5AM Club.
